For the second time this year, a pregnant right whale has been killed by a ship off the Virginia coast.
The loss of two breeding females and two near-term fetuses is so damaging to the survival of the critically endangered species that whale biologists are asking for protective measures in the mid-Atlantic.
. . . .
Northern right whales were overhunted in the 19th and 20th centuries. Only about 300 are thought to exist.
“At the rate we’re killing them off, we’re really looking down the curve at extinction,” said Scott Kraus, vice president for research at the New England Aquarium.
