UK's BE sheds 2.4 GW nuclear capacity in unplanned outages

London (Platts)--5Jan2009

British Energy has taken offline four nuclear power units, totaling some
2.4 GW of power capacity, in four unrelated unplanned outages, company
spokeswoman Sue Fletcher said Monday.

With cold weather set to push up heating demand this week, day-ahead OTC
power prices rose on the back of the nuclear outages, traders said. Coal plant
operators were also having to manage restricted production hours to keep
within large combustion plant directive rules. However, prices were not as
bullish as some traders would have expected--the UK was still set to export
towards France Monday and Tuesday, across most periods outside the early
evening peak, Block 5, participants said.
