Spurred on by the recent gas supply "crisis" over Russia's payment dispute with the Ukraine, MEPs have recommended pushing for a 60% renewable energy target in the European Union.
The increase on the existing 20% goal, set only last month for the year 2020 through the Renewable Energy Directive, formed part of a report seeking to influence the next wave of European energy legislation.
The MEPs on the European Parliament's industry committee want to see the 60% target reached by 2050.
After meeting in Brussels this week, a large majority of the committee backed the report initiated by its vice-chairwoman, French Liberal MEP Anne Laperrouze. The report forms part of the discussions on the Commission's Second Strategic Energy Review, which should lead to the next series of EU Directives on energy

The report also advocated more grid interconnections among Member States, new climate change targets for 2050 and emergency action plans to prevent future energy crises.
