Scientists agree human-induced global warming is real



While the harsh winter pounding many areas of North America and Europe seemingly contradicts the fact that global warming continues unabated, a new survey finds consensus among scientists about the reality of climate change and its likely cause. A group of 3,146 earth scientists surveyed around the world overwhelmingly agree that in the past 200-plus years, mean global temperatures have been rising, and that human activity is a significant contributing factor in changing mean global temperatures.

Peter Doran, University of Illinois at Chicago associate professor of earth and environmental sciences, along with former graduate student Maggie Kendall Zimmerman, conducted the survey late last year.

The findings appear today in the publication Eos, Transactions, American Geophysical Union.

In trying to overcome criticism of earlier attempts to gauge the view of earth scientists on global warming and the human impact factor, Doran and Kendall Zimmerman sought the opinion of the most complete list of earth scientists they could find, contacting more than 10,200 experts around the world listed in the 2007 edition of the American Geological Institute's Directory of Geoscience Departments.

Experts in academia and government research centers were e-mailed invitations to participate in the on-line poll conducted by the website questionpro.com. Only those invited could participate and computer IP addresses of participants were recorded and used to prevent repeat voting. Questions used were reviewed by a polling expert who checked for bias in phrasing, such as suggesting an answer by the way a question was worded. The nine-question survey was short, taking just a few minutes to complete.

Two questions were key: have mean global temperatures risen compared to pre-1800s levels, and has human activity been a significant factor in changing mean global temperatures.

About 90 percent of the scientists agreed with the first question and 82 percent the second.

What those right wingers do not realize is that it is NOT like Santa Claus where you can choose whether or not to believe in it.

Then again, right wingers do not believe in evolution and, maybe not so oddly enough, they haven't evolved yet. So, more study may be necessary to find out whether they don't believe because they haven't evolved yet, and therefore haven't seen the evidence firsthand. Or are they just refusing to evolve.

On global warming, IMHO, the reason they do not see it is because their heads are so far up their asses. That has to be the reason. There is no other way they can possibly deny it.

In other words, of the 3146 people surveyed, 315 believed the planet was not warming. That you can produce a list of scientists that dispute anthropogenic global warming is in line with what this survey found and does not contradict it.

For all we know, the list you supplied (without a link to corroborate it, BTW) may well include many, if not most, of those 315 dissenters.

Consider, let's say that 90% of oncologists believe that smoking causes cancer, but only 75% of general practitioners do, and only 50% of tobacco scientists believe it.

Which would you give the most credence to? Cancer specialists? Non-specialists? Or non-specialists with a conflict of interest?

You are obviously trying to imply that people who disagree aren't qualified or are not specialists in a relevant discipline.

I'd expect a rational person to respond to the question and bolster their assertion. But I fully expect the only response I'll get is a litany of insults, profanity, comparisons to Nazis, and insane rants about opening up a new level of hell. It's interesting trying to have a discussion about an adult topic with people who can only respond with childish insults.

Not a climatologist.

Of the non-duplicate names, I count at least 70 whose professional specialization has nothing whatsoever to do with climate, atmospheric science or meteorology. And one guy who has already recanted.

I also note, with contempt, the inclusion of names like Baliunas, Ball, Singer, Lindzen, McKittrick and Essex.

It's the OISM petition list, right? It's bullshit from start to finish.
