January 30, 2009—Each winter, hordes of manatees congregate in the warm waters of the Florida Everglades. And a National Geographic researcher is working to see if the species is recovering.

1. I was at the beach once.
A friend and I had swam out to the outer bar and were standing there in three feet of water. My friend looked behind me and his eyes got as big as saucers. Gliding towards us was a 12 foot gray shape. Our first thought was SHARK! but it was a manatee with horrible propeller scars in it's back. He passed about three feet from us and went on his slow, steady way. A more serene creature I have never seen.
