Don't panic, Mum, but I've built a nuclear reactor in my bedroom

The mock Tudor terraces of south Wimbledon on a sunny winter's day could hardly be more peaceful. The flowerbeds in the front gardens are thoroughly weeded, the corners of the hedges trimmed back to right angles.

The hushed streets are empty, except for a pretty young woman walking her child back from school. Behind one of these leaded windows, though, something odd is happening - Christopher Strevens, a retired school lab technician, is building a nuclear reactor.

'I've only managed to get two watts out of it so far,' he says. 'But if I increase the power, I should be able to start a nuclear fusion reaction. Of course, I wouldn't want to do a really big experiment here - it's not an ideal place. And it could be dangerous.'

'I really need to get hold of a linear amplifier to increase the power if I'm going to get a fusion reaction,' says Christopher, mournfully. 'But they cost £2,000, which I can't really afford on my pension.'

1. Is his name Stanley Pons or Martin Fleischmann?
Actually he sounds even nuttier than they were.

2. Well, OK, as long as its just to generate power.
But if he builds and H-bomb, then his hands should be slapped and he should be sent to his room -- err, locked in the basement.

4. He's a bit late.
David Hahn did this years ago. His was probably a bit more dangerous, though.

7. The sad part of this story is the waste of scientifc talent.
I really admired that boy, who had the sense of scientific adventure.

It is a shame that no one could see it for what he was, and no one was able to channel his interests.

I have always despised this story not for the boy himself, but for the terrible things it says about the education system where he lived.

Everyone in this story, with the possible exception of the boy himself, sounds like a moron.

A kid who can make his own nitric acid while in high school from materials and who gets arrested for it is a tragedy.

It has a taste of Galois.

8. You know that on the First Atm Bomb Tests
They had no idea if they were going to destroy the world or not. Big chance to take.
