Academic calls for urgent action to save Barrier Reef

A University of Queensland Professor says Australia is a step closer to protecting the Great Barrier Reef, but more needs to be done to address climate change.

Ove Hoegh-Guldberg says carbon emissions need to be drastically reduced to save the Great Barrier Reef.

In 1994 he published research on global warming and coral reef ecosystems, attracting criticism from within the scientific community.

In 1999 he was awarded the Eureka Prize for Scientific Research for his work.

He has told Australian Story that scientists now know what causes coral bleaching, but more needs to be done to stop it happening.
