Swedish McDonald's Will Let You Plug In and Charge Up

"There's already a strange phenomenon at roadside Swedish McDonald's - to avoid building a lot of extra asphalt to accommodate on-off drivers traveling in both directions getting a fast-food fix, Sweden puts a complete drive-through restaurant on either side of the road!

So perhaps it's not such a surprise that the country should take advantage of McDonald's handy easy-on, easy-off infrastructure and strike a deal with the yellow-arched fast-food joints to implement a network of hybrid-electric car charging posts.

Sweden's Elforsk is using its resources to figure out how to make the charging time at the posts extremely short, while McDonald's of Sweden will decide which restaurants get the posts - they plan to have a pilot post - 230 volts and 16 amps - installed in the next couple of months at a Stockholm McDonald's."

I've seen figures of roughly 250 kWh per mile. So a one hour charge will get you 10-15 miles.

It's not clear who's paying for the electricity, but if it's the Swedish government it would be like getting a free 1/2 gallon of gas to go to McDonald's - not a bad deal.

There are functional charging stations all over Los Angeles which were installed in the days before the zero-emission mandate was killed. Now they're covered with spiderwebs - but with an electric car and a little planning you can get pretty much wherever you want to go locally with no energy expense whatever.

If your home electricity rate is $0.13 per kWh, it would cost about $0.05 per mile for DC operation and $0.03 cents per mile for AC operation. You would pay $0.12 per mile for gasoline in a vehicle that gets 25 miles per gallon when gasoline sells for $3 per gallon.
