When I was a kid we just had the single phone book - Bell Atlantic or whatever White and Yellow Pages. I'm baffled by the multiple overlapping phone books I get, some not even from one of the phone companies (e.g., Verizon, Frontier/Citizen, etc.)
Anyway, from an email list I'm on - haven't tried using it myself yet but thought I'd pass it along:

As part of the Yellow Pages industry’s commitment to provide consumers a choice regarding the number of directories they receive, The Yellow Pages Association, in partnership with the Association of Directory Publishers, recently launched
http://www.yellowpagesoptout.com. This easy to use site allows consumers to search by zip code for opt-out information for the directory publishers serving their area.
The Yellow Pages industry will continue to work with government, environmental and consumer stakeholders to ensure that Yellow Pages directories are welcome in people’s homes. The launch of this site is the result of the ongoing dialogue between these parties.
The Yellow Pages industry has a strong reputation for providing quick and accurate local search information to consumers, and is an essential marketing tool for millions of small businesses that rely on directory products to grow their business. We will continue to innovate by providing consumers a choice as to how they receive their local business information including online, mobile, and traditional print formats.
