Oklahoma nuclear power bill advances in committee
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma lawmakers signaled their interest to go nuclear, approving legislation that would streamline the state's regulatory process and provide new incentives to build a nuclear power plant.

Two bills were approved by the House Energy and Utility Regulation Committee Tuesday after nuclear power proponents warned that other alternative energy sources alone, like solar, wind and geothermal energy, will not be enough to meet future power needs as the state and nation reduce their reliance on foreign oil.

"Solar and wind will not cut it," said Raman P. Singh, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. Singh said nuclear energy production must be considered as the state and nation work their way out of an energy crisis.

"I think we have a responsibility to our children and our children's children," Singh said.

1. Never EVER do they take into account the idea of changing our consumption.
It's all about building nukes so we can maintain our unsustainable lifestyle. God forbid they put all that money into improving the alternate energy sources. Fuck this guy.

"I think we have a responsibility to our children and our children's children," Singh said.

Of all the fucking nerve.

2. I don't know who "they" are...
but there are plenty of people out there who are working to change our habits of consumption, including quite a few who also support the nuclear power industry.

5. 'Plenty'?
Well that's nice...just because I haven't heard of them doesn't mean they don't exist.

But I've never heard of them.

3. At the rate the climate is changing in the southwest USA they will not
need the plant by the time it is built. Most everyone will have left the area. No water, too hot.

4. Desalination requires a lot of power
and if California starts large-scale desalination in the next decade, as promised, it would free up a lot of Colorado River water for AZ.

It will still be hot as hell.
