Cod fishing ban proposed

"The scientists who advise the European Union on fish quotas have recommended a ban on cod fishing off the west of Scotland, in the North Sea and in the Irish Sea. The researchers said a ban was needed to take the pressure off fish stocks and allow them to recover.

The new UK Fisheries Minister, Ben Bradshaw, who is meeting industry leaders in Peterhead, said the report from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (Ices) painted a "bleak picture".

The report said that despite previous conservation measures, cod stocks remained at "very low levels".

It has advised EU ministers to endorse zero catches of cod in the North Sea, off western Scotland and in the Irish Sea until they return to an acceptable level."

1. this is difficult

for a "fishatarian"... I gave meat up over 20 years ago, for ethical reasons. Now I have to mak the choice to exclude "endangered" species of fish. I will do that - but what species, if any, are free from guilty consumption? And are fish farms good for the environment? Don't get me wrong, I love tofu, but I also love sushi.
