Federal money used to help build ball fields, preserve open space and fishing access, and fund other outdoor recreation facilities would be cut for Montana and other states under the Bush administration's proposed budget.
The cuts are buried in the requested budget for the National Park Service, which administers the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The program provides matching grants to states for outdoor projects. In Montana, the program provides $800,000 to $1 million a year.
Cutting to the 'core'
The Bush administration budget would cut $65.6 million in state grants for fiscal year 2006, which begins in October.
