UK 2080: Age of the killer heatwave because climate change means our summers will soar

Britain could experience frequent Mediterranean summers and deadly heatwaves of 40c (104f) within the lifetime of our children, a Government study said yesterday.

The first detailed attempt to predict the UK’s climate concluded that we will see rises in average temperatures of between 2c and 6c by the 2080s.

‘These projections show us both the future we need to avoid and the future we need to plan for. The report says under the ‘medium emissions projections’ summer temperatures could rise by around 4c across the UK by the 2080s.

Under the most optimistic projection of greenhouse gas emissions, southern England could still see a rise of 3c.

Under a high emissions scenario, temperatures could rise by 12c in the summer in the South East. Across the country, average summer rainfall could drop by between 11 and 27 per cent by the 2080s, while winter rain could increase by between 11 and 23 per cent by that time.
