The mummy returns - smuggled out of Egypt by a Canadian

Cairo — A children's choir and a military band greeted the return Sunday of what scholars believe is a royal mummy — possibly Ramses I — that was looted from a tomb and smuggled out of Egypt by a Canadian doctor nearly 150 years ago.

The Michael Carlos Museum at Emory University in Atlanta, which bought the mummy three years ago from a museum in Niagara Falls, Ont., returned the relic after determining it may be the founder of the 19th Dynasty and grandfather of Ramses II.

1. Most of this stuff came out when those countries did not care.

Like the Elgins stuff.Think that is the name. When they came around , this stuff was already in Western Eur. and No, Am.I understand them wanting it back but they did not care when we took it. You can see what would happen in this case.

2. I think they did care about the Elgin but they didn't care about mummies

In fact - for many years, thousands were sold to Europe and ground up for snake oil medicines and a paint pigment (mummy brown). However, they were a bit more careful about royal mummies, as this one appears to be. (Am a museum volunteer - info based on classes taken)
