California heats up incentives for solar power

Mon Oct 12, 2009 4:22pm EDT
  • California sets new feed-in tariff for solar power
  • State, Dept of Interior to fast-track renewable projects
  • California-based SunPower could win under new subsidy
By Laura Isensee

LOS ANGELES, Oct 12 (Reuters) - California is heating up its push for clean energy, as Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger approved a new subsidy for solar power on Monday and joined forces with the federal government to fast-track renewable energy projects.

California has the most aggressive renewable energy goals in the United States, which Schwarzenegger increased last month when he ordered that the state get a third of its electricity from renewable resources by 2020.

FBR Capital Markets analyst Mehdi Hosseini said the new subsidy for solar generation could be "explosive" on top of the existing investment tax credit for installing solar systems.

"This is above and beyond the subsidies that are already in place," Hosseini said.

1. How will we manage to pay subsidies for ANYTHING? This state is frickin'
bankrupt, and raising taxes on upper income taxpayers is out of the question, apparently.

I know, they'll just eliminate Public Health services.......

2. How many millions of dollars would it take
to create enough rooftop solar to increase the state's renewable portfolio by even 1%?

This seems like money that could be better spent elsewhere.

5. You are missing the point entirely...
You seem to think that California should spend its money on things like education, health care, its parks and stuff like that.

You fail to understand that what California needs is more subsidies for people living behind the gates, at least where the gates don't have homeowners associations that require lawns and slate roofs and outlaw things like - God forbid - clotheslines.

California is rich and um, Governor Hydrogen Hummer ordered it, and he is, after all a movie star who will be out of office when the bill comes due. California has a long history of declaring mandates for people who aren't living in the present day.

These mandates are why ten percent of all the cars sold in California since 2003 have been ZEV vehicles, right? It was the vision of those folks who passed legislation in the 1990's declaring that California should be ordered to that it made it all possible.
