GM Begins Mass Production at Volt Battery Assembly Plant Today

Today the first Chevrolet Volt lithium-ion battery pack moved through the assembly line at GM’s newly developed dedicated GM Brownstown Battery Assembly Plant in Michigan.

This truly historical milestone day takes place exactly three years to the date after the Chevrolet Volt concept car was unveiled to the world, and marks the beginning of Chevrolet Volt production.

In attendance are US Energy Secretary Steven Chu, GM Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre, and Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm.

This is the first production pack to be built at what GM calls the first lithium ion battery pack manufacturing plant in the U.S. operated by a major automaker.

1. the GM Volt is badly outdated; it will be an Edsel.

there are plenty of high quality electric cars available from foreign companies, but GM is in cahoots with the government to restrict imports.

the government of japan funds r&d for their car companies. they do not pay huge health-care costs. their government puts tariffs on all foreign cars sold in japan. they build plants here with multi million dollar tax breaks from local and state governments.

we are cutting edge but right now the market share for hybrids and others are around 10% tops. right now ford has a new generation of diesel and gasoline engines. gm and ford are leading in quality and fuel economy over the japanese or korean automobiles.

gm and ford screwed up for years but they have recovered. the problem is no one has enough money to buy cars and trucks.

3. Trying to understand the picture. The black "t" shaped things

are the battery back and the 2 people are installing the
control unit on the battery packs?

6. The Black Thing on the Orange Smart Carts might be a magnetic assembly jig...

...and only the metallic unit above it the battery pack that is a component of the car.

7. I think the black things on the carts are the storage units..

The workers are adding a housing, which has also has inputs and outputs and connectors to link with the storage banks.
