The majority of the United States is in the frozen solid grips of winter and has been for a week or more.

And that's the key point - "a week or more".

You see, except for the state of Florida, you're not going to see too many record low temperature marks being broken.

It's not the magnitude of the cold, it's how long the cold is sticking around.

This is a long-duration, arctic air invasion event that is affecting close to 200 million people in the U.S.

1. Here in So. Az. we've been able to dodge the cold pretty much

Even at 4600 feet, it's been highs of 60's, lows 25 to 35. As long as the wind's not blowing, it's been quite nice.
Sorr for those suffering from the freeze.

2. Well it wasn't as wide spread

but last year for about two weeks in December and two weeks in January here on the Iron Range in MN it was below freezing for practically every single day. AND the wind chill was about 20 - 40 below. I suppose since the cold didn't cover most of the US< it wasn't news.

7. The cold isn't just in this country.

I got two overlapping long distance phone calls yesterday about how cold it was. The first was from a friend in Atlanta, the second from our daughter in England. Our daughter, who lived in Buffalo for 12 years and loved the winters there, is having a hard time coping with the cold and snow this winter in Yorkshire. She wasn't sure how cold it was because she still thinks in fahrenheit but she was even having trouble driving on icy streets. Here in the southwest corner of New Mexico, the temperature is 45 at 9:45 a.m. MST.

8. The longer the cold goes on, the more heating oil and coal for electricity is burned

The cold is causing us to use more fossil fuels, releasing even more CO2 into the atmosphere. Global warming results in even greater swings in the extremes of weather further exacerbating the problem.

What is in store for us this spring and summer? I would expect torrential rains and floods to start with, then a prolonged drought by next fall

It was -27 last weekend.
