During the latest storm, found out the roof is leaking. Called for help
and Mr. Foam came to the rescue. The repairs are going to cost a fortune but Mr. Foam states his products will insulate the roof, cut down the brutal heat during the summer and save on energy in the long run.

Hope he is right!!!

1.  I heard good things about this process. Friend here in Florida said
her electric (AC) bill went way down. She's now in foreclosure but still, she enjoyed it while she could...

2. Best thing I ever did in my flat roofed house in NM
and I noticed the easier cooling right away. I've got about 2 1/2 inches of foam on this place and it has made heating and cooling cheaper.

The roof only leaks if rain is wind driven into a soffit. Nothing will stop that.

The down side is if the place ever catches on fire, the fumes will be extremely toxic.

16. Was there a fiberglass option or would that not have worked?
Fiberglass insulation won't burn.

17. Fiberglas is generally bonded with some sort of epoxy
and that does burn and is almost as nasty as foam.

I just have to make sure I don't catch on fire. I'm not a smoker, so my odds are pretty good.

everything seem to be covered with plastic while they were working. My son says it was sprayed. He approved of the process.

9. Ok. Are they going to use shingles or metal?
Edited on Fri Jan-29-10 08:11 PM by kristopher
Metal roofing has additional tax credits and even though materials are more expensive, there is considerable labor savings. ETA It is also cooler especially since it can be beige or white.

One of the practical drawbacks is noise during rain, but if they are using foam under it for insulation (a good thing also eligible for tax credits) then it will not be noisy at all.

Be sure to get at least three estimates of the same process.

So you just wanted to provide a plug for "Mr. Foam", you had no desire for an actual discussion of roofs and insulation...

12. Are you insane? Look I'm 86 years of age - I don't even remember the man's name
but wore a shirt that had the name Mr. Foam on it. In fact I told him it was a "piss poor" name for a company!!! That got his attention.

13. Well good luck.
I misunderstood your purpose for posting.

PS. Be cautious and get three estimates.

14. Hah, 86 years old! Awesome. You keep up that spirit. :)
Hope the repairs do well, and you get a cool summer! (Looks like we're going to skip spring again this year.)

18. It's sprayed, I watched them do my roof
First they go up and do whatever prep work needs to be done, then they spray it in thin layers, building up the level in the middle so that rain won't pool. They make sure all joints are covered and go up the sides of chimneys and plumbing vents.

It's a pretty quick process, took about 5 hours for my 1300 square foot roof.

8. The one thing I do know is that the heat damned near killed me last summer
and it is not going to get any better as the years go on. Anything I can do to cut down the heat will be a life saver!!!! When I moved to Yuma some 30 years ago, summer and the humidity left about the third week in September - last year it didn't leave until the end of October

15. Yeah, this winter has been well above average except for the cold snap we had.
I suspect we'll skip spring and go straight in to summer this year. Hopefully your repairs work well! Keep us updated. :)
