Clean energy at what cost? Algonquin leader questions nuclear industry’s uranium mining practices
http://vtdigger.org/2010/01/29/clean-energy-at-what-cost-algonquin-leader-questions-nuclear-industrys-uranium-mining-practices/

By Anne Galloway on January 29, 2010

In an era of climate change, energy experts often talk about nuclear power as a carbon-neutral source of electricity compared with coal-generated electricity.

Vermont Yankee’s Web site says the plant has “prevented more than 50 million tons of carbon and other pollutants from being released into the environment. As a result, Vermont has the second-lowest per-capita carbon footprint of any state in the U.S.”

In fact, if you run a Google search for Vermont Yankee, the plant’s Web site pops up under the URL http://www.safecleanreliable.com/. Those three words — “safe,” “clean,” “reliable” — also dominate the main real estate on the front page of the Web site and serve as the company slogan.

(snip)

“I’m deeply offended when people say that nuclear energy is clean and safe,” Rekmans said. “If you have a look at my territory, there is nothing clean about it. We can’t eat the fish there.”
----
One of the things that comes through loud and clear is that the nuclear industry is not to be trusted. If it was as safe as the pro nukies say it is then why so much effort is put into misleading us? At every turn from day one it's been the same thing, obfuscate and out right lie when that doesn't work. They can't be honest with us because if they were they never would have gotten to build the first one as we would not have allowed it. dm

I'm proud of the fact
we stopped

Here's a wiki link on that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Fox_Nuclear_Power_Plant

Here's a google link if anyone wants to read more, just take a pick: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=pso+black+fox&aq=f&aqi=&oq=&fp=435311d5ec9ae78f

1. But of course, YOU don't question the shattering of cap rock to get gas to run your computer.
Do you?

You certainly aren't interested in the results of cadmium mining for solar cells and batterires either, or how many sheep on the North Platte die as a result of it.

Couldn't care less.

Since you live by google searches and are completely unfamiliar with the contents of the scientific literature, you are unfamiliar entirely with the cost to ground water of fracking for the gas that will displace or the possibility that in certain types of granite formations, this practice will result in the release of more uranium.

Nuclear energy need not be perfect to be better than all the stuff anti-nukes don't give a shit about. It only need be better than every thing else.

8. Why does everyone bring up Chernobyl?
Edited on Mon Feb-01-10 01:15 PM by Merchant Marine
It was a designed-by-committee communist nightmare that was under-maintained and staffed by the failed products of the soviet system.

It has about as much in common with a modern western facility as a torch has with a lightbulb.

9. Because that's the biggest bogeyman they have to stoke their fears.
It doesn't have to be relevant.

It doesn't have to be a genuine risk.

It just has to be a well-known "scary event involving nnnuuuccclleeaarr pppower"
so that they can spout it whenever & wherever they can (cf. "Al Qaeda").

You get used to them after a while.

10. The reason that many bring up Chernobyl
is because it is something that we can point to and say yes this can happen, TMI is the same thing. You think for a minute that we were told all the truth about TMI, if you do I have a great idea that needs funding, care to help me out with that. Looks like Turkey Point is soon to be joining the ranks of the likes of TMI and Chernobyl if the regulators don't do their jobs. I'll ask you how would you like to see a dead zone here in the northeast part of this country, I know you aren't here maybe but I do care and a bunch of us do care. The world is being poisoned by nuclear energy and from what I've read here and elsewhere is any indication it looks like some of the European countries have got the waste disposal down pat, load it up in an old dilapidated ship, pay the mafia to tow it out to sea and sink it. Myself I don't think that is the proper way of disposal. Have you noticed that the companies whose waste were sunk hasn't admitted yet and probably won't ever, that it was their waste. Kind of like taking a shit out in the woods you get away from it as fast as you can. We can do something about co2 in our lifetimes but with radioactive material we can't do that, we can't even say for sure we have what we have stockpiled now is safe for the duration that it is dangerous to man and beast. We bring up Chernobyl and to a lesser degree TMI because it shows that our biggest fears are real. Those two incidences also drives home what I've been saying all along and thats the industry can't be trusted to be honest with us. If they feel they have to keep us 'mis-informed' rather than being honest with us about what is going on then I will work towards shutting them all down as long as I'm alive. Nuclear power is neither safe nor clean and the kicker is they can't be trusted to do what is right. :hi:

5. He just pulls that shit out of his ass
big fella allways works this way, if you don't like nukes he'll try to scare you away from this website and when he sees he can't do that he starts in with his holier than thou bullshit calling you everything in the book. I just laugh at his stupid ass. It appears the man has a bad case of an inferiority complex.

7. Nnadir is infamous on this board for personal attacks and spouting
bizarre rhetoric.

He never backs up his assertions when presented with reality. (other than selectively cutting and pasting incomplete information).

He's the side show of this forum. He's like the crazy uncle that visits on a holiday. He goes off the rails than quietly vanishes for a while. While everyone stares at one another saying, "what was that all about?" LOL
