A wind turbine collapsed just yards away from stunned students as it was being set up on a school field yesterday.

The playing field at Fakenham High School, Norfolk, was evacuated after the 40ft turbine fell, crushing the bonnet of a contractor's van.

The £28,000 renewable energy source was being assembled by Lincolnshire-based firm Gladwood BCS.

The school's response is to plan to buy another windmill to demonstrate how "green" they are.

Wind power is not a major source of energy in Britain, or for that matter, anywhere else on earth.

5. Definitely A Bit of Embarrassment, BUT

Definitely "a bit of embarrassment," but if it reduces the demand for electricity from filthy, deadly, carbon dioxide producing, fossil fuel-burning power plants, I'm for it.

I'm not anti-nuclear, but I am definitely in favor of phasing out coal-fired and other fossil fuel-powered power plants.

8. Actually, after considering it a long time, I've come to the conclusion that in these times,

with resources so constrained - more than people realize - wasting money on this stuff is a very unwise choice.

It's like fighting a range fire with a squirt gun, and, to boot, selling the squirt guns for $5,000 a shot so squirt gun contractors can get rich.

The wind industry and the dangerous natural gas industry are arm in arm, hand in hand.

They are a very dishonest bunch.

We could build one nuclear plant, just one, and provide more energy than all the wind power in Denmark provides.

We could build one and a half, and match all the wind power in California - without trashing the desert.

When I came to Democratic Underground 8 years ago, I considered myself pro-wind. I have changed my mind. This business is a terrible waste of scarce resources in a time that is far more dangerous than 95% of the people seem to realize.
