Last week local environmentalists who support the construction said a professional analysis puts the cost of building the towers at less than what the plant's owner, Exelon Nuclear, estimates.
Save Barnegat Bay Chairman William deCamp Jr. said analysis rebuts "Exelon's excessive estimates of the expense that would be incurred (if) the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (were) to require cooling towers at the power plant."

The primary plea of those opposing towers has been that the cost, which Exelon officials have said would force the plant to close. Exelon officials have gone on record during recent public hearings and in their written statement to the DEP that the agency's water permit calls for cooling towers that would not be cost efficient for its operation.
