A Maine lake has been declared ice-free earlier in the season than any other year in 136 years of record-keeping.

The Sun Journal of Lewistion says the previous earliest ice-out date was March 30, in 1981. That's eight days later than this year.

Since 1874 the water district has been keeping track of the date the lake opens for boating. Ice didn't clear from the lake until May 14 that year, which remains the record for the latest ice-out date.

The Maranacook Lake ice is out of here, disappearing earlier than ever before, according to a veteran ice-out watcher.

Al Godfrey, of Winthrop, has been tracking ice-out dates on Maranacook since the 1960s, and has records kept by others dating to 1925.

Godfrey said he declared the ice out of the large lake Sunday. Godfrey said there were still a couple of small pockets of ice in some coves, but the lake was navigable from the public boat launch in Winthrop north to the public boat launch in Readfield.

Godfrey said the March 21 ice-out is the earliest on record. It went out on March 25 in 1981 and 1982. It has gone out in March only five times in the 85 years of record-keeping.

A once in 500year event would randomly occur without any external excitation. Now three such events within 100 years would imply a change in climate. Key Findings

Ice-out dates from 29 lakes in New England with 64 to 163 years of record were assembled and analyzed for this study (Hodgkins and James, 2002; Hodgkins and others, 2002). Twenty-two of these lakes are in Maine, four are in New Hampshire, and three are in Massachusetts.

Ice-out dates have become significantly earlier in New England since the 1800's. Ice-out dates changed between 1850 and 2000 by 9 days in northern and mountainous areas of New England (primarily northern and western Maine) and by 16 days in more southerly locations (figs. 1 and 2). Changes in the ice-out dates over time were very consistent between lakes within each of these two areas of New England.
