1. EVs are great city cars

I've used an electric moped for 7 years. It's great for short hops when I'm not carrying much (although it's handled 2 full grocery bags and 2 cases of soda). It gets me there in a non sweaty condition, unlike a bike.

If you want a car to take a long road trip, you can always rent one with a gas engine.

The idea of never buying gas is appealing, but there are obviously costs attached to owning and maintaining electrical storage devices(batteries).

I would imagine the batteries have a warranty. Hopefully it is something expansive like 10 years/120,000 miles.

Also a decade from now replacement batteries will hopefully be substantially cheaper.

9. Not sure about battery life but electricity is a magnitude cheaper than gasoline.

So Prius gets 50mpg. Say you keep car 10 years, drive 120,000 miles (total) and average gasoline over next decade is $4.00
120,000 / 50 = 2400 gallons of gas * $4 = $9600. At $5 it is $12,000.

EV uses 200 watthours (0.2 KWh) per mile on average. I use numbers from Tesla Roadster (a sports car) because economy of LEAF isn't available yet.

So 120,000 miles * 0.2 = 2400 KWh.
If your average electric rates are $0.10 per KWh that is $2400.

$9600 to $12000 vs $2400. Nice fuel savings of $6K to $10K over lifetime of vehicle.

Internal Combustion Engines are INSANELY inefficient. Nothing else operates with such horrible efficiency.
When you burn a gallon of gas you get 12% actually usable energy and 88% is lost by heat. EV tend to be 90%-95% efficient (plug to wheel).

5. Ya, but what about a good 4WD electric/hybrid car?

I wish I could go more green in my vehicle. Especially considering I live in a rural mountain area and most of my clients, etc are 10 miles away or more...

But I have yet to see an AFFORDABLE green 4wd... or am I missing something?

What I want to see is a "conversion kit" that can go into any car - so we can modify our current vehicles and still do something better than using just gas.

I have a 1998 Honda Civic with 205k on it. I'm thinking about getting a Leaf when it inevitably dies--which could be any day now. Up until 2009 Colorado had a messed up tax credit formula for electric cars that meant you could buy a Tesla for 50% off. They realized the mistake and changed it in 2010--damn!

Nissan has announced it will be offering personal charging docks, which operate on a 220-volt supply, in tandem with the purchase process. Nissan is providing these home-charging stations, which will be built and installed by AeroVironment, as part of a one-stop shopping process that includes a home assessment and installation of the dock. The average cost for the home charger plus installation will be $2,200. Chargers and installation will be eligible for a 50 percent federal tax credit up to $2,0005.
