E.ON AG, RWE AG, Vattenfall AB and EnBW Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg AG told German officials they may shut down nuclear reactors early if the government proceeds with plans for a tax on fuel elements and stricter rules, Spiegel reported.
Representatives of the energy companies told the government that operating many of the German reactors will no longer be profitable if the plans go ahead, the Hamburg-based magazine reported on its website, without saying where it got the information. The utilities may purchase nuclear electricity outside of Germany if needed, they said, according to Spiegel.
