Sri Lanka to plant 1.1 million trees in 11 minutes
Environment Ministry to set world record

The Ministry of Environment will set a world record by planting 1.1 million saplings island-wide within 11 minutes on November 15, to mark President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s second swearing in, a spokesperson for the ministry said. The main event will be held at Temple Trees on November 15 at 10.07 a.m.

..

“We need to increase the forest coverage in Sri Lanka and this will be a national program in achieving that too well,” Minister Yapa said. “According to President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s vision for tomorrow - our aim is to give the future generation a greener and fertile environment,” he said.

1. And they're considered a third world country.

While we can't wait to cut down evey tree in sight. My neighbor in NJ cut down a HUGE oak tree almost a 4' diameter stump and another 9 of various types and sizes. Every tree on his property. Didn't want to rake leaves. I offered to do it for him.

It was a moonscape when I looked out my windows. So happy to have moved here.

2. The idiot property owner behind me did the same thing
I didn't even know that a three story apartment complex was behind me when I bought my home; the tree canopy was that thick, and they were magnificent 200 year old live oaks. Now I have a view of a parking lot with a huge featureless yellow cinder block monstrosity with blinding security lights to gaze at. Americans can be such short sighted nature hating morons.

4. My situation exactly

What the hell is wrong with these people. My idiot couldn't leave the one HUGE healthy oak which was about 2' from the property line. Over 150' to the back of his property. I wrote the Mayor and did all I could to try to save the tree - all for naught. Then a few month later NJ comes out with a Tree endorsing license plate. I have a pic on my computer somewhere. I wanted to get one and shove it up someones arse. and yeah, what you said.

edit: to correct spelling while typing in pissed off mode.

3. I was on a tree planting job once. Planting cottonwoods on
the banks of the Little Salmon River in Idaho. It was part of a state highway job. Some of the trees were supposed to be planted on a beach/rock bar. We went down there at it was all rock with a little sand in between and more rock under that. No way you could plant trees there!
We told the state inspector and he said just do whatever you have to to get the trees in there. Evidently too much hassle to change the job specifications. We came back with a compressor and air hammer and drilled holes right in river rocks and planted the trees. I can absolutely guarantee you that not one of those trees grew. We were paid our prevailing wage though and were definitely not trying to set any speed records. Your tax dollars at work.

We are definitely going back wards as a nation. The sad part is that this isn't a recent event it's been down hill for years. Slowly so as to not frighten the natives.

7. Let the alien archaeologists a couple of thousand years from now
figure out THAT one! Actually there are for sure fishermen on that rock bar, that see the holes every year, that have to wonder what the heck was going on. I imagine most years a lot of the rocks will be buried by sand, some holes filled in by silt, but here and there they will see a couple. One of those days where we couldn't believe what we were doing. The boss and the inspector said to do it, so ok.

6. Sometimes I get the
feeling if we left the trees alone everything could be right with the world. I love the old majestic trees. Few of them remain where I live.
