Hanford made plutonium for nuclear weapons in a huge hurry with new untested technologies. Occasionally they even spilled radioactive toxins on purpose to better understand what they'd been monitoring from the Soviet Union.

It was a very ugly business having little relationship to modern nuclear power technology.
