Explosion, fire knock Indian Point 2 offline

BUCHANAN — Indian Point 2 has been shut down by a transformer explosion and fire. There were no injuries and no release of radioactive materials in the 6:39 p.m. Sunday incident, Entergy spokesman Jerry Nappi said.

Indian Point 3 is operating normally at full output but IP2 will offline until the transformer is fixed. It is a major piece of equipment that adjusts the voltage for transmission to the outside world. It is located outside, and not near the nuclear reactor, he said.

The Verplanck Fire Department responded about 7:15 p.m., but was not allowed onto the grounds. Firefighters stood by outside the gates for a while. By 8:15, no outside firefighters were left outside. Entergy security officials would not release any information.
