World's Largest Solar PV Facility Now In Canada

The largest solar photovoltaic (PV) facility in the world was completed last month. This facility is now online and is producing up to 80 megawatts of electricity. But the surprising factor is where this facility is located. It's not in the desert southwest of the United States, nor is it in China nor in Europe. Instead, the Sarnia Solar facility is in Ontario, Canada, across the border from the state of Michigan.

That's 80 MW of capacity. The article specifies an expected production of 120,000 MWh/yr. That translates to an average output of around 14 MW, for a capacity factor of 17%.

6. It's worse than that. The $400 million only bought the 60 MW expansion

The original 20 MW was paid for by the first owner. So that means the last 10.5 MW of production cost us...

That $400M CAD was just for the 60 MW expansion.

With the CAD trading at par with the USD, that $38/watt is the same in both currencies.

It's justifiable as a pilot/public relations project, but it's not a serious alternative to coal.

Who want to build a pipeline from Alberta to the BC coast to tanker crude to China. The same Enbridge which allowed a million gallons of oil to spill into the Kalamazoo River in Michigan this summer. This project only went ahead because of feed in tariffs that will end up costing the taxpayers a crap load of money down the road.
