Paper manufacturer Verso Paper Corporation has started work on a $40 million biomass power project at its Bucksport mill in Maine.
The company is preparing to replace coal-fired capabilities with biomass in the mill’s #8 Boiler and installing a new 25-megawatt turbine generator.

The project will provide a 43% increase in thermal energy production from renewable biomass, the company said, providing enough additional renewable energy to supply the equivalent of 30,000 local homes.

The Bucksport Renewable Energy Project is scheduled to begin actual construction before the end of the year.
