Tropical Storm Harvey was christened late this morning about 200 miles WSW of Bermuda. A tropical storm warning remains posted for the island. The storm is swirling toward the NNE currently, but is expected to turn to a more northeasterly track (and strengthen a bit more) later today.
No rapid deepening of the storm is expected, however, since its low-level center remains largely devoid of convection. The center of Harvey is forecast to pass very close to Bermuda tonight. Gusty winds and heavy showers are likely in the island nation over the next 24 hours.
Note: Harvey is the 8th storm/hurricane of the 2005 season; this is the earliest on record that 8 storms or hurricanes have occured. Records go back to 1851.
Elsewhere in the Atlantic, a healthy-looking cluster of thunderstorms is rumbling westward just southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. It appears there may a low pressure area associated with the storms. Something to watch.
