3. I'm a little confused on #5 & #6

Were spent rods exposed? I know the pools heated up but I don't remember any mention of them exposing rods. Things have been happening so quickly, hard to keep track and I don't see any mention of it here. Yet they drilled holes in the roof as a precaution? I saw this yesterday and was even more confused..
