Report backs Scottish renewables under independence

A new bank report has backed Scotland's renewable energy policies, just days after a major finance company warned businesses against investing in the renewables sector in Scotland.

That warning was followed by a report by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers which criticised the Scottish government's plan to meet 100% of electricity demand from green sources by 2020.

In its report, Altium Securities said it "did not share recent competitor analysis that utilities developing renewable energy assets were exposed to stranded asset risk from an independent Scotland".

It also argued Scotland had the potential to be the lowest-cost generator of wind energy in Europe due its "unique wind characteristics".

And hopefully the Thrifty Scotts will demand that it come to them in the form of small wind turbines installed individually on each residential dwelling.

From the street, the turbines are mounted in such a way that it only looks like a small attic fan is mounted on the roof.

The technology needed to cut the world’s greenhouse gas emissions by 85% by 2050 already exists, according to a joint statement by eleven of the world’s largest engineering organisations.

...The statement says that generating electricity from wind, waves and the sun, growing biofuels sustainably, zero emissions transport, low carbon buildings and energy efficiency technologies have all been demonstrated. However they are not being developed for wide-scale use fast enough and there is a desperate need for financial and legislative support from governments around the world if they are to fulfil their potential.

...“While the world’s politicians have been locked in talks with no output, engineers across the globe have been busy developing technologies that can bring down emissions and help create a more stable future for the planet.

“We are now overdue for government commitment, with ambitious, concrete emissions targets that give the right signals to industry, so they can be rolled out on a global scale.”
