The Killing of Karen Silkwood By Richard Rashke

This is an updated edition of the groundbreaking book about the death of union activist Karen Silkwood, an employee of a plutonium processing plant, who was killed in a mysterious car crash on her way to deliver important documents to a newspaper reporter in 1974. Silkwood’s death at age 28 was highly suspicious: she had been working on health and safety issues at the plant, and a lot of people stood to benefit by her death.

The issues this book explores -- whistleblowers, worker safety, the environment, and nuclear vulnerability -- are as relevant today as they were 38 years ago. This edition includes a new foreword by labor scholar and activist Kate Bronfenbrenner, a new preface, and three short chapters that explore what has been learned about Silkwood since the book’s original publication in 1981.

If all you know about Karen Silkwood, her work, and the circumstances surrounding her death is what you saw in the movie Silkwood, with Meryl Streep portraying the young activist, you’ll be in for a real awakening: the author, an investigative reporter, explores the possibility of involvement not only by the Kerr-McGee Corporation, but by the Atomic Energy Commission, the FBI and the CIA.

"Impressive and vital...meets a demanding test of objectivity."
WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD

"Riveting...as fascinating and gripping as anything John le Carre or Agatha Christie could devise."
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR

2. The murder of Karen Silkwood really built a fire under us when we were protesting
PSO's building of Blackfox nuclear power plant near here. It was like a kick in the ass to get our asses in gear and stop this nuclear power plant in our back yard.
