In the intial reports (quoted in the OP linked at the end of this post) they tried to downplay the significance of the degraded containment system by saying the cracks were in "architectural design elements" of the containment building which I pointed out made it sound like they were talking about aesthetics not load structure. Now they've gone all in and actually made the leap:
