Robot measures record high radiation in Fukushima nuclear reactor
At the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, a new record has been broken—but not the kind you want to see.

Robots sent inside the structure which houses Reactor No. 3, one of those where the fuel melted down in mid-March, measured radiation on the first floor at a level of 1,600 millisieverts per hour.

This means that any human being who spent a few hours in that location would receive a dose of radiation sufficient to end one’s life after a few highly unpleasant weeks.

These findings underline that the situation at the Fukushima plant remains dangerous, even if the situation is gradually improving overall.

The Japanese public remains concerned. The government continues to promise that they will keep the public informed...

2. Glad it's robots measuring it and not people. It'll be radioactive past most of our lifetimes...
Too long for monitoring unless the world is reduced to a totally technologically controlled, authoritarian social model which this planet's ecosystems does not respect. Things move, they mix, they are subject to abrupt and catastrophic changes. That's why nuclear power is not a freedom loving enterprise.

3. Is there a point at which this could be called an open air reactor?
Are these radiation levels just from exposed materials? Or are they high enough to indicate ongoing reactions?

4. It is exposed materials, as you put it.
They are building fiberglass shells around each reactor to contain the dust and debris but they've completed only one so far.
