Xenon 400,000 times normal found in Chiba air immediately after Fukushima nuke accident

CHIBA -- Radioactive xenon-133 some 400,000 times normal levels was detected in the atmosphere here immediately after the outbreak of the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant, a radiation survey organization said.

It took three months before the volume of radioactive substances returned to normal levels.

The Chiba-based Japan Chemical Analysis Center made the announcement during a radiation research session in Tokyo on Dec. 1, organized by the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry.

Keisuke Isogai from the center denied that the high concentration of radioactive substance posed a health hazard.

"I think xenon-133 drifted from ...

2. That's a great example
...of a total failure to communicate.

There is a Wako Japan. The pronunciation is closer to wacko than to Waco, though.

Chiba/cheeba?

3. It spread far and wide
There was a great site that animated the spread.

Of course it was shut down after a month.

The US got nailed pretty good.

5. 400,000 TIMES!!!! O.M.G.!!
Oh wait. I suppose it's relevant what "normal levels" are.

"the detected amount translates into a cumulative external exposure to radiation of only 1.3 microsieverts over the three-month period"

So if it had been several million times normal then residents would have been exposed to an entire extra chest xray over three months?

Paranoia knows no bounds, does it?

6. Nuclear industry spin knows no bounds does it?

It is good to know that xenon separates itself from all other emissions and travels alone. That is your implication, isn't it?

7. Spin? The quote was from the article you posted.

Not at all. You're the one who picked a topic that singled out one isotope.

A game you play frequently (since we're speaking of "spin"). Fukushima still doesn't come close to Chernobyl (let alone "Chernobyl on steroids"), but since it's ON the ocean (rather than hundreds of miles away), it obviously put more contamination into the ocean. So which comparison can we count on to show up in multiple posts?

I just (correctly) pointed out that the one you elected to highlight was entirely irrelevant.

8. Yes, spin Baggins.
Your attempt to emphasize the exposure from xenon in isolation from the other contaminants that were omitted is a transparent ploy to divert attention from the scale of emissions demonstrated by the 400,000X increase in this particular pollutant.

Maybe you should go back to telling everyone how the situation is contained with nothing but a few vented gasses being released; or perhaps trying to convince everyone it is like eating bananas - that's always a perennial favorite...

9. Sorry. As usual the deception was all yours.

Actually, you made an attempt to emphasize a relative value (400,000 times) in isolation from the relative data (which was clearly provided in the source article and was therefore clearly intentional deception on your part).

Had I posted a thread claiming "Fukushima put out an insignificant amount of (some element found only in tiny quantities in a reactor), then you would have a point. Correcting your spin, OTOH, is entirely different.

10. I don't think there is anything I could say...
...that would make your words less credible than they now are. All anyone has to do is read the thread and the linked article.

11. Your best shot at making that post more credible...
... Would have been to cut it off after the third word.

Yes ... All anyone has to do is read the article. The xenon was a complete non-issue.

But some people can be paranoid about anything.

12. You can't possibly believe your unceasing spin has a positive effect on public perception...
I'm starting to think you are actually a dedicated antinuclear campaigner doing a parody designed to disgust people.
