Just ordered 200 chestnut and walnut seeds for spring planting!

I finally pulled the trigger and placed an order with Burnt Ridge Nursery out of WA for nursery seed. 4 lb of hybrid chestnut seed and 1 lb of Russian walnut, so approximately 175-200 seeds depending on size. For $40 total with shipping, that seems pretty reasonable IMO.

2 years from now, I'm going to be up to my eyeballs in tree seedlings; 10 years from now, I'll be up to my eyeballs in squirrels!

4. I have a house on 1.5 acres of land that I'm converting to edible landscaping

Between the vegetable gardens, orchards, snow/windbreak, and other nut and fruit-bearing trees and shrubs, I should have room to sneak in 15 or so of the best seedlings when spaced properly (20-25 ft between each tree). I have access to free 1-gallon plastic containers at work that will work perfectly for pots when drainage holes are cut into them, so I'll be planting the stratified, sprouted seeds directly into those come spring. In fall they'll be sunk pot and all into the garden and protected from rabbits by chickenwire fencing. I figure that by spring/summer of 2013 they'll be large enough to plant in their permanent spots. Some of the ones I don't use personally will be given away as gifts to friends, family, neighbors and coworkers. Most of my family are farmers, so they have plenty of land to plant on, and all of my neighbors also have acreage. Anything left over, I figured I'd just give away or sell for cheap on Craigslist.

I hope to live somewhere like that someday!

For now I'm doing what I can with my city square. We don't have room for more trees, I even have to dig up the ones the squirrels keep trying to grow :P But we made big gardens and put up some bat & bird houses and built a pond so the local wildlife has fresh water. It's a very busy city here but we have rabbits and possums and sometimes big birds and once I even saw a fox.
