In 1998, the Sierra Club membership voted not to adopt a policy on limiting immigration to the US. At this time, antiimmigration groups and animal-rights activists have mobilized to take over the 15 seat board of the club. Over 6000 of their members have joined the club just to vote on new directors.
Presently, 3 of Board's 15 Directors are SUSPS-endorsed (formerly called Sierrans for U.S. Population Stabilization) candidates (Ben Zuckerman, Dog LaFollette and Paul Watson). There will be a vote early this year for another three members. They have advocated former Democratic Governor of Colorado, Richard Lamm; noted author, entomologist, and Cornell University professor of Agriculture and Life Sciences, David Pimentel; and former Executive Director of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Frank Morris.
I would urge DU Sierra Club members to pay very close attention to the ballot this year. Since most members don't vote, your votes are even more important.
There is a Sierra Club group called "Ground Swell Sierrans" who are trying to stop the antiimmigration position. Please have a look at their website and judge for yourself.
