3. it's more about how much snow the mountains above Flagstaff get
and yes, they had NO snow and these wave of storms is supposed to dump over a foot, maybe two so it has to help...

as far as down here, it will clean the air which we need so bad and the cactus can fill up enough to hang on for a while more

and it's certainly better than nothing for day after day after day......

5. How much do you need to catch up?
About 10 feet? I certainly am glad you are getting some, I know it was getting desperate there. Enjoy the rain! And I hope you don't really make up your deficit all at once.

7. no, the area rarely gets more than a foot a month or so
but we'd need several storms like this and it's pretty darn late in the year

I heard that even the Cactus (Cacti?) were suffering due to lack of water. That's pretty bad.

10. It's WONderful!
My car's finally getting a good rinse; I may not have to dust for a few hours; I can wear sweats without sweating; the air smells wonderful. Of course the dogs are none too happy, but they'll get over it.

18. rain and dogs
We have a puppy who's over 4 months old but it's the first rain she's seen. She's just standing out there barking at it. Shame we won't have the wildflowers and carpet of green on the mountains we had last spring. By the way, I love your user name. My real name's Keridwen.

20. This may have saved us from a historically bad fire season.
It may still be bad, but we may have dodged a record-breaker.

28. I wouldn't have thought you have much of a fire season.
Edited on Sat Mar-11-06 08:14 PM by NNadir
Unless of course, you are speaking of the mountain areas.

Is it not true that the vegetation in the desert itself is too sparce to create much of a fire?

It's been some time since I've been to Arizona, but what I recall of the Phoenix area was that there wasn't that much to burn. Am I wrong on this?

33. I had a conversation about this with a lovely lady on the way to PHX
Despite my job title, I know very little about western wildfires. I learned, at the Atomic Test Site in NV, no less, that a rainy spring can make the fire season worse - the plants grow like crazy, then dry out.

On a flight leg that ended in PHX, a woman sitting next to me on the plane explained that after 2 years of drought (she blamed all the coastal people moving into town and wanting their lawns and golf courses) people were worried about fires.

I found this interesting, because in my experience, no one is worried about fire until you can see it in your neighborhood.

25. You weenies, lol! LA has gone more than twice that long on more
than one occasion in recent years...........

Our vegetation even seems to be able to cope with it. No dying cactuses. Just those sporadic conflagrations in the chapparal..............

34. Nope. San Fernando Valley. We do get some water from the
Central Valley, also, but an awful lot comes from the Eastern Sierra. They pump the aqueduct water up over the mountains into the valley.

East of here they get theirs mostly from the Colorado River.

32. Here are some more maps
The following map will change as time moves on, but it should be reflective of the storm today on the timestamp of my posting. The map also has a timestamp on it.
http://wxmaps.org.nyud.net:8090/pix/avnmr1.00hr.png
I find this particular map curious, I've watched storms from them for years intermittently, and this particular counterclockwise vorticity (red loop) appears larger than I remember typically seeing.

It's quite unusual for the "540" line (rough guide to rain versus snow) to dip down into Baja California, Mexico.
http://wxmaps.org.nyud.net:8090/pix/avnmr2.00hr.png

A whole series of maps can be viewed from:
http://wxmaps.org/pix/analyses.html

The key to the maps to aid understanding:
