SHARI, Hokkaido -- Nearly 200 more dead birds have been picked up on the coast of Shari in Hokkaido's Abashiri district, bringing the total to 2,085, local government officials said.
Officials said 197 more dead birds were found between March 7 and 12. Of these 189 were murrelets. About 70 percent were found between Utoro Port and the Horobetsu River, about 2 kilometers to the northeast.
Many of the birds that were found were covered in oil, officials said. More dead, oil-covered birds were also found in the neighboring town of Koshimizu on Saturday and Sunday, along with the feathers of several types of seabirds.
