67,000 died from Chernobyl disaster
Moscow (dpa) - At least 67,000 people are thought to have died in Russia alone from the after-effects of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster, ecological experts said in Moscow Wednesday, dismissing a UN estimate of 4,000 past and anticipated deaths. <snip>

"In Russia there were 67,000 additional deaths from 1990 to 2004 (resulting from radiation), if you add the number in Belarus and Ukraine the total will be several times greater."

The estimate was drawn from mortality studies in contaminated regions north of the now decommissioned Chernobyl plant in Ukraine, where two million people live.

Experts at the Russian Academy of Science's Independent Centre for Ecological Studies in St. Petersburg found the death rate there to almost four per cent higher than the national average, likely stemming from long-term exposure to radiation and contaminated food products. <snip>

1. If the old USSR built
reactors like the US and France do, this would have never happened. Still, so sad.

2. The "experts" are not identified in this newspaper report.
They have identified an "expert" from the pro-global warming group "Greenpeace," who has issued yet another number in the plethora of numbers that Greenpeace issues under the "Died from Chernobyl" rubric, but as usual, there is no attempt to compare this (dubious) number, contravened by the United Nations in reports involving thousands of identified referenced scientists.

More of the usual Greenpeace nonsense, I think, picked up yet again by yet another newspaper reporter as a page filler.

In any case, even if it were true that 67,000 people died from the operation of a type of nuclear reactor that is no longer being built, it still does not even remotely approach the number of people killed by fossil fuel operations in a single year. To wit, in the 20 years since Chernobyl occurred, it comes to about 3,400 people per year, a number that is easily exceeded by the number of people who die each year in New York City from air pollution.

3. This was linked to the dismembrement of USSR, not Chernobyl
It is well known that there was a large excess of mortality in the ex-USSR following the fall of the wall in Berlin in 1989. Life expectancy in Russia declined by several years (down to less than 60 years for men if I remember well)...

4. What BS, only a few dozen died from Chernobyl.

The Nucleophobes are so desperate to keep thier delusion going that they conveniently forget to factor in the general decline in health following the collapse of the USSR. These people are worse than MSM when it comes to spin.
