1 (or 2) Gallon 500

Back in the early eighties, there was a race called the 10 Gallon 500. Ran from Hartford, CT up into VT and back. What are your thoughts on bringing back this type of competition? Give the vehicals 15hrs to complete the course of 500 miles over secondary roads. While using less than 1 or two gallons of Gas or Diesel.

that these kind of contests are more stunts than useful exercises. The theory seems to be that they provide a test-bed for technologies that might be useful in the future, but I'm skeptical of that theory. My favorite example are the "solar-car" competitions. They're interesting engineering challenges, but no useful car is ever going to run on PV panels. Not even if we invented PV cells that operate at 100% efficiency.
