Putin Orders Pipeline Moved Away From Lake (Baikal)
http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/w-eur/2006/apr/26/042606740.html

President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday ordered a planned Siberian oil pipeline to be moved farther away from Lake Baikal, the world's largest body of fresh water, in a surprise announcement that dismayed energy officials and delighted environmentalists.

Putin's decision - which came on the 20th anniversary of one of the world's greatest environmental catastrophes, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster - was called "wonderful" by Greenpeace.

The route should be moved more than 25 miles north of Lake Baikal, Putin said at a discussion with regional governors over Siberia's development.

"If there is even the smallest, the tiniest chance of polluting Baikal, then we must think of future generations. We must do everything to make sure this danger is not just minimized, but eliminated," he said.

1. What a nice surprise!
That's as startling as, say, Bush calling a halt to the sale and destruction of our national parks would be.

2. "we must think of future generations"
wow - didn't think I'd ever hear ANY politician say those words again.

and it's most unlikely that any Republican will even entertain the thought...
certainly not our idiot-man-child-monkey-boy of a president.

5. Lake Baikal to Russia is what the Grand Canyon is to the US
A natural marvel. Glad to see they give a shit.

6. Very nice and, if any big Western oil companies are inconvenienced...
...by the decision, so much the better. Granted, we may end up paying at the pump but they'll gouge us, no matter what, so I say fuck 'em.

7. Well, he also doesn't want the thing anywhere near where people are
likely to congregate, either. Put the thing way out in east Hellhole, and it is much easier to monitor it. Put it near a lake, where people might fish, play, enjoy the natural beauty, and it's so much easier for a Chechan 'terrist' with mayhem on his mind to sneak in and cause trouble.

It's a good decision, in any event. He gets cred with environmentalists, and creates a more secure pipeline. Cash for his country, to boot.

8. "we must think of future generations" -Jr.didn't see THAT in Putin's eyes!
.
.
.

The USA's proliferation of Depleted Uranium and millenniums of genocide in the Middle East has not gone unnoticed

and any nuclear incursion in or around Iraq, Iran or elsewhere that could effect the well-being of the citizens of Russia, China or elsewhere will not be tolerated

The "bully on the block" went way, way too far this time

I fear the consequences of one,

just ONE nuke from the USA dropped anywhere on the other side of the globe

It will be raining nukes from Russia and China all over the North American continent

And I just live too close to the USA to be comfortable with that

If I lived in Australia or South America - I wouldn't give a shit

But I don't

so I am now a VERY Concerned Canuk
