National Coordinator, Council of Renewable Energy in Nigeria, Mr Odigha Odiagha, has predicted that exploitation of the country's renewable energy potential could create avenues for the employment of about 500,000 job seekers in the next 10 years.

Odigha, in a statement yesterday, described the development of Nigeria’s renewable energy sector as a major strategy that would not only conserve the nation’s oil reserves, but would also develop the economy and improve the populace.

"Developing, manufacturing, building, installing, and maintaining renewable energy technologies has the potential to create many new Nigerian-lead jobs and powerful modern industries.

He said successful implementation would result in the installation of 2,945 mega watts of wind, solar PV, solar thermal, small hydro and biomass by 2025, roughly an equivalent to the entire capacity used in Nigeria today.

They are the most corrupt government on the face of the planet, and care less about their citizens than you or I care about stepping on an ant by mistake.

Before setting up the project, the village, with a population of 5,000, had not known electricity since its existence.

To provide services to the island, which can only be reached by boat, the state government decided to launch the solar project there in May.

Nineteen other remote villages would also benefit from the project before the end of the year, according to state government officials.

''The tropical climate makes solar energy the most viable alternative source of renewable energy in Nigeria. Harnessing the sun's energy to produce power is an imperative for rural areas where the hope of being connected to the national grid is very remote and extremely expensive,'' Kadiri Hamzat, Lagos State Commissioner for Science and Technology, said in Ikeja, capital of Lagos State, in June. He was briefing journalists about the activities of his ministry in the past one year.

According to the story, this project was paid for by the Japanese, not by the Nigerian government.

I would be only too happy to be proven wrong; to see the Nigerian government actually do something for its people with all that oil money would be heartening, indeed.

But the Nigerian government did not build this project. Japanese foreign aid did. All the Nigerian government did was to allow the Japanese to fund it.

Bear in mind that Nigeria has a pretty high unemployment rate and a minimum wage of about $40 per month, so it's not going to cost much out of those oil revenues. On the other hand, 500,000 more jobs is a vote winner, and you can't take bribes if you're not in power... :)

One the one hand, It's high time that a country recognised that fixing our fossil addiction can actually be a source of employment and economic growth, rather than being the end of the world.

On the other hand, it's pity that the country is Nigeria, which accounts for fuck all CO₂ production (53MT CO₂ for 133 million people - that 0.4 tons per capita, compared to 20 or so for the US)
