The 3.6-acre solar panel array will be the subject of a Jan. 24 Yuba City Planning Commission public hearing on a use permit.

The 775 kilowatt array would be built on the south end of the wastewater treatment plant located off Burns Drive, over a stormwater basin. Concrete piers would raise the panels five feet above a grade surrounding the basin.

Yuba City's installation was said to rank among the nation's largest municipal photovoltaic systems. When combined with a 300 kilowatt turbine powered by wastewater plant byproducts (
edit: biogas), the city would have 1 megawatt of generating capacity - enough to power 1,000 homes, Lewis said.
