Smoke from bushfires burning in Victoria's south-east is expected to blanket Melbourne prompting a warning from the state's chief health officer.
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has issued a high smoke advisory for Melbourne after winds changed from a light easterly late Wednesday to a weak sea breeze.
EPA spokesman John Williamson said that Melbourne's poor air quality was expected to deteriorate further on Wednesday.
"There is currently a significant amount of smoke south of Melbourne and this situation is not expected to improve until this afternoon," Mr Williamson said. Victoria's chief health officer Dr Robert Hall said the high smoke levels could significantly aggravate respiratory problems such as asthma.
