2006 Canada's Warmest Year On Record - Within 0.1C Of All-Time Warmest (1998)
Last year was Canada's second-warmest in 60 years of record-keeping, coming within 0.1 degree of the all-time record set in 1998, Environment Canada reported yesterday.

In the continental United States, a record was set with the highest average temperature in 112 years of record-keeping, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The latest data underlines the long-term nature of the warming trend, even as winter weather returns to much of Canada this week.

Environment Canada says seasonal temperatures have remained above normal for more than nine years. The national average temperature in 2006 was 2.4 degrees Celsius above normal, based on preliminary data.

"One of the outstanding things is, the warming was really was right across the country," said Environment Canada climatologist Bob Whitewood. "There were no regions that were cooler than normal and with a country this large, with normal variability, you'd expect some areas to be cooler."
