Milwaukee - Lake Mendota Finally Freezes Over - Latest Since 1931
The last time the water froze this late on Lake Mendota, America was in the depths of the Great Depression. The Wisconsin State Climatology Office confirmed Thursday that ice first covered Lake Mendota in Madison on Saturday - Jan. 20.

The record for the latest freeze is Jan. 30, and it was recorded in 1931, according to climatologists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Records go back 152 years.

The reason for the slow freeze this season is record-breaking high temperatures in December and early January.

But figures from the state climatology office reveal that since 1979 there has been a gradual slowing in the freezing of the lake.
