recycling electronics
i'm posting a message here cause it seems like the best place.
Where can i go to recycle all my old computers and electronics?
I have a lot of stuff. 3-4 computers, 5 monitors, broken vcr, etc.
All the computer stuff is very old (i'm a collector), so i can't donated it.

I'm about at my wits end since the county only has a recycling
event twice a year and i missed the last one. I'm in Nashville, TN.
Anyone know of anyone i could take this stuff and safely dispose
of it?

1. Have you tried
Freecycle or Freesource yet? Also - post on Craig's list in Nashville. You just may get someone to come by and pickup at your house for free.

2. will check into
thanks.
I'll post it on freecycle.
I'm not sure how popular an IBM XT, 386 computers, and monchrome
monitors are :) but i might get a bite.

Freesourcesrn.org is interesting but they don't have a group
in TN although they have a blog it looks like. I'll
look more into those.

I wish recycling this stuff was simple and easy like recycling
pop cans...

3. we're quite lucky
in our county. There is an electronic recycling morning once/month. Sometimes on the freecycle list here I do see people looking for old computer parts to tinker with - so you may get a few bites.

4. Our town just started a program
where we can put electronics into the blue recyclin bin!! Just not monitors or TVs, but all other stuff.

I've got a piece that's going in this week.

I second the Craigslist suggestion -- post it in the "Free" section -- you'd be amazed. There are all kinds of gadget guys who love to pick up spare parts (even old ones can be broken down into useful parts).

6. Perhaps this will help.
Perhaps not.

http://www.earthpro.com/electronics.htm has the following:

Waste Programs
Division of Solid/Hazardous Waste Management
Solid Waste Disposal Board
Computer and Electronics Recycling in Tennessee
E-Waste & U-WasteContact:
Joe Putnam
Phone: 615-532-0882
jputnam@mail.state.tn.us

Robert Nakamoto (U-Waste)
Phone: 615-532-0868
Rnakamoto@mail.state.tn.us

Louis Bordenave
lbordenave@mail.state.tn.us

I'd contact one of them, e-mail's essentially free and fairly anonymous (yes, you give your name, but it's not like you'll ever meet this people).

Hope it helps. If it doesn't, here's a way to find a local contact with experience: look up some local university/college student government--they always have a recycling group, and it usually has a contact e-mail. They're eager to help people recycle.
