MONTREAL -- Canada is warming twice as fast as the world average, the latest figures from Environment Canada indicate. "Canada is one of the countries where temperatures are rising fastest and is one of the most vulnerable to climatic changes," said Ian Bruce of the David Suzuki Foundation.
The average temperature of the planet increased 0.6C during the 20th century. But according to the most recent analysis of Environment Canada, between 1948 and 2006 Canada's mean temperature rose by 1.3C.
"The increase could be greater than that because the figures for Canada take into account only the past 60 years while figures for the planet stretch back for a century," said Hyacinth Lacroix, who tracks climatic change for Environment Canada. Many leading scientists are forecasting a steeper increase of world temperatures.
Lacroix said while an increase of 1.3C doesn't sound like much, she pointed out that if the planet's average temperature fell by as little as four degrees, "we would have 4 km of ice over our heads."
